Jakarta (16/11) – Commission for the Supervision of Business Competition (KPPU) held a two-day workshop on the theme of “Competition Analysis in e-Commerce” from 15-16 November 2017 in Sari Pan Pacific Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia. The workshop, which took place under the JAPAN-ASEAN Integration Fund Project on Technical Assistance for ASEAN Competition Authorities (JAIF), was held in cooperation with Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) and was attended by more than 40 participants from 10 (ten) ASEAN member countries, and contributed by pertinent experts from Japan and Singapore, which are Mr. Kazuo Tosa from Konan University, Dr. Naoya Kaneko from NERA Economic Consulting, Dr. Cassey Lee from Yusof Ishak Institute, ISEAS and also Mr Junichi Yanagita from JFTC.

The workshop focused on growth on e-commerce and its impact to competition. Some ASEAN member countries such as Indonesia, Viet Nam and Singapore also share their experience on e-commerce cases and market studies. The discussion took place on the issues of e-commerce which related to trend of evolving e-commerce in ASEAN, underlying the impact of the growth of e-commerce to competition, balancing the pace regulation and the growth of competition in those issue, understanding type of competition concerns and anti competitive infringement in that issue to market, assessing relevant market and market power in e-commerce market, assessing competition restraint, effects and analysis in the issue, enforcement strategies in dealing with the case, also challenges in building effective cross boarder cooperation in e-commerce market.

The workshop closed with thoughts from the regional experts on how competition agencies can find ways to build effective cross-border cooperation despite the on-going challenges raised by international cooperation agreements in e-commerce, and its implication to competition enforcement. (FKN)
